Tips from your Daytona Beach jewelers
Do you take your jewelry to the beach?
Did you catch our Monday Morning Moments on YouTube recently about taking your jewelry to the beach?
I have loved jewelry since I was four years old according to my sister, and so I definitely come by the love of it honestly, so Tracy and I have the wonderful opportunity over the years to speak in front of many organizations and groups, and we have several different topics (actually, right now we have six) that we talk about.
During these presentations, there are always things that come up over and over again related to those topics, so I wanted to talk to you about an experience this past weekend.
We had a beautiful, spring-like day here in Daytona Beach so after many overcast days, we really wanted to go to the beach. This also reminded me that summer is on the way, so I wanted to talk to you about taking your jewelry to the beach. Obviously, I could just say “Don’t Do It!” and end this blog right now.
Unfortunately, that makes a boring blog so I’m going to explain…
Why it’s best to leave your jewelry at home when you go to the beach
Sometimes, when you are relaxing at the beach, you can forget that you are wearing jewelry, or you take it off for whatever reason… maybe you are applying sunscreen, want to go into the water for a swim, or something else. Perhaps, you put it in a shoe with your keys.
No one will know it’s there, right?! Everyone does this so it’s not a big secret.
And if a thief doesn’t take your jewelry (and keys!), the waves might! Sometimes, the surf can surprise you and one big wave can go way up onto the beach and wash your shoes (and the hidden jewelry) right out into the ocean!
If you are wearing body chains, bracelets, rings, or other jewelry, you may get out of the water and discover that you are no longer wearing it! Remember, you not only have to contend with the waves, but the temperature will change the size of your finger too, and your ring may just fall right off.
Also, you may forget that your jewelry is tucked away in your shoe and start playing with your children, have a conversation with friends, and more. Then, you put on your shoes when you’re ready to leave, and the jewelry falls into the sand. Now, finding jewelry in the sand is worse than finding a needle in a haystack! Why do you think there are so many people with metal detectors combing the beach on a regular basis?
In addition to the water, you also need to think about the sand. It can get under your ring and cause irritation. We call this ring rot, and it can make your skin red and takes weeks to go away. Then, you can’t wear any of your rings because it’s just to uncomfortable.
But you can avoid this heartbreak! Leave your jewelry at home!
Now, if you forget and find that you still have your jewelry on when you get to the beach, take it off in the car and DO NOT put it in a tissue. Someone, (even you) will throw it out! Place it in a coin purse or something you know you will not discard and be sure to lock the car.
And on a side note, if you wear your jewelry all of the time, and it gets stuck, did you know that you can go directly to your local fire department, and they’ll cut it off for you? No need to go to the emergency room!
Please, take your kids to the beach. Take your dogs to the beach if your area allows it and take your best friend to the beach. But don't take your jewelry to the beach!
It doesn't belong there, and we want you to be able to enjoy it and possibly pass it down to family members. So, let’s make a pact this summer that we are not going to take our jewelry to the beach!
