Do you know this phrase to keep your favorite items safe? Do you know the six most important words to protect your jewelry? Here at your Daytona jewelers, we have one thing that we’re very obsessed about, and that is making sure that the prongs on your diamonds or other rings are in good shape so that you don't lose your diamonds. So, with this in mind, the six most important words to protect your jewelry are… Change your clocks. Check your prongs! Since we just moved our clocks forward for Daylight Savings Time, it’s time to check the prongs on your diamonds and other rings! This is a saying we actually made up in our store several years ago, and we take it to every single speaking engagement that we do throughout the year for various women’s groups, organizations, charities, and clubs. When we do this, you can see that people don't necessarily want to hear it because they think it’s just another expense. But it’s actually a very reasonably-priced service. Why? The maintenance cost is so much less than having to replace your cherished gemstone or diamond out of your engagement ring. In the jewelry industry, we say that you should check your prongs every six months. The trouble with this is that most people get very busy. Then, six months can easily turn into years where you don’t even remember when you had the prongs checked. However, this is something that is very important to remember and should be a high-priority item twice a year. After all, you don’t want to look down at your hand one day and see that you’ve lost a diamond! That’s a bad day! So, to make this as easy as possible to remember, we made up this six-word phrase right here at your local, Daytona jewelers. Yes, we realize it’s not exactly six months, but it works! For example, one lady came into our jewelry store in Daytona. She mentioned that she had seen all of our emails, Facebook posts, newsletters, and more about checking the prongs on your rings. And, she told us that her prongs looked fine and didn’t worry about it. However, as a nurse, she was constantly washing her hands. One day, she looked at her hands and realized that the prongs on her ring were gone, and the ring was just being held on by caked-on soap and lotion! She also used some kind of powder with her gloves at work. This meant that there was also some kind of temporary glue holding the ring in place. While she thought that it was secure because the diamond didn’t move, she actually had worn all of the prongs down! Yes, things like cleaning your hands and using the plastic bags at the grocery store can damage your prongs and your rings overall. If you have just one prong pull the wrong way, you can easily loose the diamond or gemstone it was holding! This is why we tell people to take their rings to an experienced jeweler to check the prongs. They know exactly what to look for and it only takes a few minutes… and most of the time there is no cost to have your ring checked and cleaned! Not only will you leave the jewelry store with a ring that sparkles even more, but you can also relax knowing that you’ve saved yourself from a lot of potential heartache! Change your clocks. Check your prongs! Stop by your Daytona jewelers today and get peace of mind!
